Guarding Against Spam
There is no foolproof method for keeping Partner Search contact
information out of the hands of telemarketers and e-mail spammers.
The NYC Dance Partner Search provides a reasonable measure of protection,
by posting listings without e-mail links
or e-mail addresses that look like username@hostname.com. And to
make sure that the information is available to real dancers looking
for partners, the e-mail addresses can be accessed in two different
ways:
(1) For people using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher,
a special link (E-mail Address) has been
provided that shows an e-mail link in a separate window. The e-mail
address is stored in an encoded data base, which makes it very unlikely
that webcrawlers or spammers would get access to it.
(2) For people using other browsers, e-mail addresses are also
shown with the e-mail address reversed. This way anyone can reverse the
characters in the name and type them directly into their e-mail client
to send a message to a prospective partner.
We hope that this system will make it possible for dancers to
communicate with each other reasonably easily without making e-mail
addresses available to spammers.
